Application for a scholarship
An application for a scholarship can be submitted informally. To apply for a scholarship, write a letter (in German or English) to the Scholarship Commission which type of scholarship you are applying for and why you would like to receive this scholarship. Depending on the type of scholarship, the following documents must be enclosed with this letter:
Language scholarships:
- Curriculum vitae (CV) with contact details (postal address, e-mail, phone number) as well as information on school education and previous course of studies;
- Proof of completed undergraduate theological studies (Bachelor’s level): copy of the original + certified translation in German or English;
- Proof of basic knowledge of the German language by an official certificate (preferably at level "A2");
- Letter of recommendation from the responsible local bishop.
Research scholarships:
- Curriculum vitae (CV) with contact details (postal address, e-mail, phone number) as well as information on school education and previous course of studies;
- Brief outline of the research project;
- Proof of completed advanced theological studies (Master's level): copy of the original + certified translation in German or English;
- Successful participation in the language course in Paderborn or proof of good German language skills (German certificate, level "B2");
- Letter of recommendation from the responsible local bishop.
Fellowship:
- Curriculum vitae (CV) with contact details (postal address, e-mail, phone number) as well as information on school education and study history;
- Detailed outline of the research project;
- Proof of completed advanced theological studies (Master's level): copy of the original + certified translation in German or English;
- Successful participation in the language course in Paderborn or proof of good German language skills (German certificate, level "B2");
- Letter of intent by a professor of theology at a German university to cooperate with the candidate with regard to the outlined research project;
- Letter of recommendation from the responsible local bishop.
Scholarship applications must always be submitted in writing and are to be sent to the following address:

Transmission of the application by e-mail is possible: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. If the scholarship application is sent by e-mail, at least the necessary recommendations must be submitted afterwards by mail in the original.
The language courses in Paderborn usually start on 1 September every year. Applications for language scholarships must be submitted by 31 March of the respective year.
Applications for research scholarships and a fellowship can be submitted at any time, but applications for a research scholarships must be submitted at least 3 months before the planned stay and applications for a fellowship at least 6 months before the start.
The scholarship commission of the German Catholic Bishops’ Conference decides on the granting of the scholarship. Applicants will then be informed of the result in writing.
